NURSING SCHOLARSHIP

NURSING SCHOLARSHIP HONORS ELLICOTT CITY TEEN LOST

IN TRAIN DERAILMENT

Nursing students at Howard Community College (HCC) will receive a financial boost thanks to the support of Mark and Sharon Mayr, parents of Rose Mayr (pictured), who was tragically killed in last year’s Ellicott City train derailment.

Rose, an Ellicott City native, was a 19-year-old student at the University of Delaware in August of 2012 when she and columbia-motherher high school friend, Elizabeth Nass, also 19, were killed as the result of a CSX train derailment.

Rose’s parents, along with the Howard Hospital Foundation, established the Rose Mayr Nursing Scholarship this year. It will provide $1,000 per semester for four years to each student selected.

Mark and Sharon Mayr said that Rose had chosen to study nursing before she died.

“In requesting that donations in her memory be made to the Howard Hospital Foundation, we felt we were both honoring her aspirations for nursing and benefiting the people of Howard County,” the Mayrs said in a statement. “Establishing a nursing scholarship is appealing because the funds will have a large impact.”

The college is grateful for the gift, says Dr. Kate Hetherington, president of HCC.
