Send a girl to camp and you’re not just filling her summer with fun. You’re filling her with confidence, ambition and character.
“Camp Louise is dedicated to helping campers find their ‘inner awesome’ without
outside pressure,” says Alicia Berlin, director of the all-girls Jewish sleep-away camp in Washington County. “Single-sex camp allows campers to focus on building self-confidence, forming strong friendships and experiencing new activities.”
Whether they stay for one week or seven, the hundreds of girls who come to the nearly century-old Camp Louise — as well as the boys, who attend its all-male counterpart, Camp Airy, in Frederick County — leave with lasting memories and the beginnings of lifelong bonds.
“I was recently at a wedding of a camp friend,” recalls Berlin. “Over half of the bridesmaids were from camp, and the father of the bride made a remark in his speech about how he isn’t sure who had more influence over his daughter — her family or camp.”
