CHUCK AARON, ALLEN ALEXOPULOS, MAX CROWNOVER AND JIM OLIVER PRESENT “ELEGANT WOODTURNINGS” AT THEIR JUNE 2016 ART SHOW AT HORSESPIRIT ARTS GALLERY
Maryland Woodturning Artists Chuck Aaron, Allen Alexopulos, Max Crownover and Jim Oliver have an affinity for turning locally found wood – recovered from downed trees that would otherwise be landfilled or used as firewood – into beautiful artifacts.
Their art show will run from 12 June to 23 June 2016 at HorseSpirit Arts Gallery, 8090 Main Street, Ellicott City, MD 21043 with the opening reception on Sunday, 12 June from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
Allen Alexopulos – Master Woodturner – has been creating custom woodturning art in his studio in Annapolis, Maryland since 2001. Allen’s artistic goal is to highlight as much of the natural figure, texture and color from the wood as possible. Simple shapes combined with graceful curvatures amplify the beauty of his turnings. Although Allen has explored many areas of woodturning, his principal repertoire includes natural edged vessels, lidded boxes with ornate finials, hollow forms and formal vessels.
Chuck Aaron is an accomplished woodturner from Columbia, Maryland who creates beautiful bowls, hand-crafted pens and other wooden art. Chuck’s art allows him to create physical objects that express the beauty he perceives in the world around him. His woodturning engenders objects that show the beauty of color and wood grain in a way that is both visual and tactile.
Max Crownover creates art using both wood and metal in his studio in Columbia, Maryland. He has loved working with wood for as long as he can remember and has done a variety of woodworking, including building and refinishing furniture. Max creates bowls, wall hangings and other items.
Jim Oliver – an accomplished Woodturner – is a resident of Oella, Maryland (the historic portion of Ellicott City lying east of the Patapsco River). Jim began woodturning after his retirement from the Agricultural Research Service in 2004. As a retired chemist, Jim still enjoys experimenting, and investigating new stains and wood conditioners that may permit utilization of spalted and highly figured woods that would otherwise be unsuitable for use.
