WINE COLLECTING TIPS

Why collect? Some people collect wine so they don’t have to run out to the wine store. Others want to “lay down” bottles to see how they’ll age and improve over time. Still others collect for the fun of it, just like comic books or baseball cards. Whatever the reason, here are some tips for those starting out.
Whose wine is it? Your wine collection should reflect you and your tastes. Sure, we all need some advice from the experts but, in the end, your collection should be about what you like to drink.
What to collect? Just because a wine reviewer raved, it doesn’t mean you will. Everyone has different taste, so make sure to try a bottle before you buy a case, especially if you’re collecting age-worthy wines. Remember good wines may get better with age, but bad wines won’t.
Red or white? Red wines are the rock stars of any collection, but don’t forget the whites and sparklers. There are so many different wines to experience and savor; don’t limit yourself.
Where to store? Pick a spot that is dark, cool and somewhat humid. High temperature is wine’s #1 enemy, so avoid places that might get hot. For a small “drinking” collection, a basement is always a good bet. If you don’t have a basement, consider buying a wine refrigerator or “cave.” If you’re really into it and want to lay-down for the long term, a climate-controlled wine room is the way to go.
How to collect? Search, read, talk and drink. There are many excellent online articles about getting started in wine collecting. Talk to folks who collect wine; they’ll be more than happy to share their experiences and advice with you.
